Rinse beans in a colander, put in a big pot, cover with water, and soak overnight.
Or quick soak: bring to a boil. Let boil for 2 minutes. Turn off heat and let sit for 1 hour.
Drain and cover with fresh water. Add garlic cloves. Bring to a boil. Boil gently until soft.
Make sure the beans stay covered with water throughout. Do not add salt until the beans are completely cooked!
